Abu Dhabi Airports Company retail sales reach record

Published 01 February 2011

Abu Dhabi Airports Company, the UAE airport operator, notched up record retail revenues in 2010 at its duty-free outlets helped by events like the Formula 1 racing, new shop openings and improved retail offerings.

The average transaction value at the airport's retail outlets was $52. Retail revenues for the year reached $158m.

The high average transaction value was attributed to a combination of a rich retail mix, marketing campaigns by retail operators and the large variety of luxury brands at the stores.

Cosmetics, luxury goods, watches, electronics and branded eyewear saw the highest growth in demand.

ADAC said that in 2011, it will renovate the duty free area in Terminal 1 and launch new luxury brands, retail and food and beverage outlets. ADAC had launched many marketing initiatives targeted at passengers in 2010.

The airport's marketing initiatives as part of the F1 season in Abu Dhabi in November 2010 turned out to be a money-spinner.
The launch of the Shop-Dine-Unwind brand for Abu Dhabi Duty Free in May also boosted retail growth.
