Aelia reports 2009 financial results

French travel retailer Aelia has reported total group sales of EUR586 million ($796 million) in 2009, which is a decrease of 3.4% compared to 2008.

The company also said that it significantly outperformed the European market in 2009 posting solid sales and encouraging growth in sales per passenger despite challenging trading conditions. The company reported sales per passenger (SPP) across Aelia's fragrances and cosmetics, liquor, tobacco, fine food and confectionery outlets at Paris Charles de Gaulle and Orly International airports run by Sociéte de Distribution Aéroportuaire (SDA), in the recent report. The company's joint venture with Aéroports de Paris were up 4.1% in 2009. Total sales of the company to domestic travelers were also up by 3% in Paris airports with SPP up by 9%. The company’s sales in Aelia's UK operations fell slightly in 2009, but total sales per passenger in London Luton and Belfast international airports rose 8.7%. In Poland, the retailer benefited from the first full year of trading in Warsaw Frédéric Chopin international airport terminal two in 2009, posting significant sales growth compared to the 2008 period.
