Canadian airport April duty-free sales rise by 18%

RBR Staff Writer Published 14 June 2011

Duty-free sales at Canadian airports continue to demonstrate robust growth with an almost 18% rise amounting to $72.67m in the month of April 2011 as compared to the corresponding period in 2010, according to reports.

Total duty-free border store sales reported a 2% increase to touch $10m in April this year. However, these stores saw a growth of over 40% amounting to $365,209 in the jewellery, watches and clock category. On the whole, jewellery, clock and watch sales increased by 46% to touch almost $1.02m. Accessories sales went up by 24% to reach $637,590.

Three out of the four land border regions demonstrated an increase in sales in April this year as compared to the corresponding period last year. Only the Prairie region reported a 6% decline in sales for the month partially due to the floods in Manitoba in early 2011.
