June duty-free sales at Canadian airports rise 14%

Canadian airports posted a 14% rise in duty-free sales to touch $31.8m in June 2011 compared to the corresponding period last year, according to the Canadian Border Services Agency.

Total airport retail sales in Canada grew by 12% in the first six months of 2011 to touch $114.6m compared to the corresponding period in 2010, according to DFNIonline.com. During these six months, watches and jewelry posted the most robust growth - a 32.3% rise compared to the first six months of 2010. Fragrance, cosmetics, fashion accessories, food and liquor too posted double-digit growth while souvenir sales fell 29.21%.

Meanwhile, Canadian land border stores saw a 3.6% growth in June amounting to $13.4m compared to June 2010. In fact, land border store sales posted a 0.37% increase to touch $60.5m in the first half of 2011.

While all Canadian duty-free border regions posted a sales growth in June and in the first six months of 2011, only Ontario reported a sales decline of 1% during the period.
