Mauritius to become duty-free shopping destination

RBR Staff Writer Published 28 April 2011

A projected revenue growth of 7.7 % (nearly $1536m) in the tourism sector this year has prompted the Mauritian government to explore ways to develop the country into a duty free shopping center to boost retail growth.

The Mauritian government expects the turnover from the retail industry to reach $723m by 2020, and intends to initially target around 200,000 shoppers from traditional markets such as Europe, as well as emerging markets such as India.

The Mauritian Board of Investment data demonstrates that property development and shopping mall projects that are currently in the pipeline will need an investment of nearly $2.3bn. Mauritius' biggest shopping mall being developed by ENL Property of Mauritius, a subsidiary of ENL group and Atterbury of South Africa, is expected to open during September this year.
