Shanghai city plans to build duty-free resort in Pudong district

RBR Staff Writer Published 19 April 2011

Shanghai's Municipal Tourism Administration plans to seek permission from the central government to develop a duty-free resort in Pudong district.

The announcement was made by Shanghai Tourism Bureau director Dao Shuming on 17 April. Last month, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce said the project is presently in the research and survey stage.

The Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce also said duty-free outlets would be opened at airports, Shanghai's Disneyland Park and other fixed points. The groundbreaking ceremony for construction of Shanghai's Disneyland Park was held on 18 April. The park reportedly would include local Chinese elements.

Officials believe that Shanghai needs an expansive duty-free policy if it has to become a prominent hub for international tourism and a shopping paradise. The Chinese metropolis also has plans to develop many tourism projects by 2015.
