WDF opens walk-through store at Birmingham International airport

RBR Staff Writer Published 17 May 2011

World Duty Free has opened a walk-through store at Birmingham International airport's new terminal. The outlet has 19,000 sq ft of retail space and will be operated by WDF for 10 years.

Among the brands that feature at the outlet include Mac Cosmetics, Tom Ford and The Body Shop. Tobacco products are displayed at the front of the outlet. WDF claims that the display of tobacco products has been designed to meet UK government regulations, which would be implemented from 2012. According to the new regulatons, tobacco products needs to displayed in separate area, away from categories such as chocolates, which attract kids.

The new terminal, which is called One Terminal, has brought the airport's security points at one area. The terminal was officially opened by Transport Minister Phillip Hammond.

The terminal presently handles 4.5 million departing passengers annually, of which 70% are EU passengers. The airport plans to increase that figure to 9 million in another six years.
